How This Combat Medic Found $407k in Veteran Perks
Free fishing trips? Who knew you could have it so good.
Richard has leveraged over $407,000 in veteran perks to build a fulfilling life, transition to a lucrative profession, and build a meaningful community.
Not only did he start a business, but he’s spent time doing what he loves and saved thousands on fishing trips and hiking adventures.
Richard has a beautiful family of six, his mental health has improved massively, and he's taken advantage of hundreds of thousands of dollars in benefits while building the life of his dreams.
Want to see how he did it? Let’s break it down 👇
Bet You Haven’t Heard of These…
$36k - Richard had always been interested in computers, so learning about computer programming seemed like a natural next step after coming home. He applied to the Vets Who Code bootcamp, where he learned the skills that he used to launch his business.
$15k - He participated in the SBA’s Boots to Business (B2B) program. It was here that he received professional training and resources to kickstart his website development business.
$13k - Richard attended free business and technology workshops through the National Veterans Small Business Coalition (NVSBC). The lessons he learned helped him secure his first few clients for his business.
$4k - Richard joined a free veteran fishing program (Warrior Fishing), which supplied him with equipment, a fishing license, and the opportunity to connect with other vets.
$3k - Richard's love of the outdoors led him to enroll in the Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors program, where he participated in free guided hikes and connected with other veterans.
Priceless - Richard made some of his closest friends on a weeklong Outward Bound backpacking trip through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
Department of VA Benefits
$232k - Richard’s service-related injuries qualified him for lifetime disability benefits, providing a foundation of financial stability for his family. He earns approximately $2,418/mo from these benefits. Want to learn more about the benefits you might qualify for? Check out DAV for more information.
$104k - Richard enjoyed the coding bootcamp so much that he decided to take his education to the next level. He used his GI Bill benefits to earn a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from University of Michigan. It gave him a whole new level of confidence, and Richard says it empowered him to fulfill his dream of starting his own business.
Richard's story demonstrates the creative ways veterans can leverage available programs to improve their quality of life.
He used his veteran status to build a successful business, enjoy outdoor activities, and ensure his family's well-being.
